2026 #26 – Why Gus Triandos? Or was I really a Closet Cubs Fan? Gus Triandos and the Chicago Cubs 1948-1965

By Toby B. Singer

So you are from Chicago but find Cubs fans Cubnoxious? What do you do? Follow you favorite player! For Toby Singer that was Gus Triandos – an All-Star catcher for the Orioles (and later played for the Tigers and Astros). Toby discusses his memories of Baseball in youth – based around Triandos’ career. A typical chapter goes by year and discusses Gus’ and his teammates season, the Cubs season, and other tidbits from the baseball year that Toby either saw or wanted to discuss. Every year, he also discusses who is new to the Cubs each year and gives a biographical paragraph. Like most fan “autobiographies” he also has regular digressions about other baseball related topics be it trades, the Hall of Fame, and players.

A couple of years ago, a guys in one of the baseball forums on the internet and I were engaged in a couple of discussions about baseball. Eventually he tells me he self published a book about baseball, the Cubs, and his youth. I impulsively bought a copy from Toby. My main complaint is that he needed an editor – to help with the dry facts; to have him answer the questions he leaves hanging, to punch things up a bit.
