2024 #20 – Star Wars: The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness

by George Mann

A year has passed since the incident of the Falling Star. The Occlusions Zone is in full swing. Jedi are being hunted inside, and outside the zone the Republic and the Jedi are trying to figure out how to rescue those inside. Marchion Ro is leading the Nihil into random, chaotic attacks. Avar Kriss is inside the zone trying to do his best to disrupt the Nihil and help the innocent. But will the Jedi and High Republic be able to penetrate the wall?

Phase I started with bang – introducing a new cast of characters, centuries before the Phantom Menace. Yoda is off on a sabbatical when a interstellar tragedy occurs as the Republic is expanding its influence. But this was a declaration of war, not a natural disaster. Phase II takes us back to before the Nihil were the Nihil, and we see the history of who they are and where they are from.

Phase 3, starting with this book, begins with a slow pace and a narrow focus. It took me a while to read, because the pace takes a while to get going. And the last 150 pages or so, is where the novel shines.
