Jo Walton, drops you into the middle of the world of Taveth, at Applekirk Manor in the Marches. This is a world where magic is stronger in the East and extremely hard to do in the West. In a location where Magic is easy, but not as prevalent as farther East. Time also changes as you move East to West, someone could spend a year traveling “there and back again” and years may have gone by. What happens when one guest comes and brings romantic challenges to Taveth’s marriage, and a former lord of Applekirk returns after generations?

This is a small slice-of-life primarily in Applekirk that reaches epic proportions. Walton drops you into the world and takes time explaining how in this world: marriage, religion, time, magic, and other things work. When everything is more fully explained things mentioned in passing earlier click into place. I enjoyed the book. The resolution to the story was interesting. I am not sure I loved it.
