By Rich Cohen
Was the 1987 NBA season the best season ever? Rich Cohen thinks it was. Focusing on 4 teams – the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Los Angeles Lakers Cohen recaps their seasons, talks about their superstars (with Bird, Isaiah, Jordan, and Johnson at their peaks) and walks us through that year’s playoffs. Mentioned in brief are the other teams and their players. All the time arguing that this was the best season, with the best stars in NBA history.
This is a 30,000 foot overview of the subject. Coming in at about the same length as “10 Innings at Wrigley”, Kevin Cook’s opus about one Phillies-Cubs game; Cohen makes a lot of good points, but doesn’t spend too long on them. The one thing it needed was a comparison with the other contenders for “Best NBA Year Ever”. He mentions them with little analysis. I liked the book, it brought me back to my pre-teen years where the TV was on whatever sport was playing.
