2025 #23 – The Fall of Arthur

By J.R.R. Tolkien Edited by Christopher Tolkien

This was a project that Tolkien started earlier in his life, and then seemed to have picked up again at various points. This is Northern alliterative verse and like many of Tolkien’s attempts it goes on for a little more than 40 pages and then stops abruptly. The rest of the book is about 10 pages of vocabulary – to help with the words and people mentioned in the verses. Followed by several essays on – the Arthurian tradition of poems, the poem and its relationship to parts of the Silmarillion, and how the poem evolved over drafts. There is also an appendix on Old English Verse.
