Faith is the first in a series of books where leaders from the various parts of the church can discuss the issues important to the Communion. From the promotional material – “Each contributor brings a unique perspective to the question of faith, but all confront this central dilemma: How can we enable authentic conversations around the practice of faith in a global context in which many theologians and spiritual leaders in the Global South are often relegated to working in a ministry or a social justice context? How can contemplation and reflection nurture social action?”
Contributors to this volume include: Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Stephen Spencer, Simon Ro Chul Lai, Thandi Gamedze, Thokozile J. Mbaya, and Wilhelm Verwoerd. The forward is written by Rowan Williams, who sees the need in hearing from a variety of perspectives that are not just from the Western Church. Like most books with many perspectives and authors the chapters range from something like a sermon (Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin); a pastoral talk (Archbishop Thabo Makgoba); and something like a testimony, but with more (Wilhelm Verwoerd); and more traditional entries.
If nothing else, reading the book emphasized to me the variety of starting points that each of the authors have in discussing Faith. And knowing the diversity, giving grace to listen.
