2024 #58 – Smoke and Whispers (The Oxford Investigations #4)

By Mick Herron

Zoë Boehm is dead to begin with. Or at least Sarah Tucker is asked to come and identify the body of someone wearing her jacket, with her wallet, and a comb…. And while staying in Newcastle after seeing the police, Sarah runs into her old acquaintance Gerard Inchon is there. And how was Zoë’s jacket, stolen by a suspect years before come back into her possession? What is going on in Newcastle?

Sarah is the main character of the story. A Sarah who like in the first book is obsessed with the case, is not wondering about her sanity this time. This time she’s only looking for the truth. Was the body taken up from the water, after several days, really Zoë? Why is Inchon in town? Is everyone who they say are? This one had several mysteries interwoven, was well written and has a relatively satisfying conclusion.
