2024 #57 – Why We Die (The Oxford Investigations #3)

By Mick Herron

Zoë Boehm takes a simple job – find the men who robbed a jeweler. The reason for her involvement, he sometimes deals in items that are not in his legal inventory. And she has a tax bill due, and not enough money to cover it… At the same time, Tim is trying to find a reason to live. Renting a hotel room, he goes to get a drink – and meets Katrina, who has some visible bruises. It’s not long before her husband Baxter arrives… And Baxter, along with his brothers Arkle and Trent inherited the family business. But they are not business men, using the business as a front for their more questionable activities. Throw in their boss and a crooked cop who has it in for Zoë, will she figure out all of the connections and games being played before someone removes her from the board?

I enjoy Herron’s writing, and this has been the most consistent novel of this series so far.
