2024 #47 – The Mercy of Gods (The Captive’s War #1)

By James S.A. Corey

Humanity has long lived on Anjiin, but now an alien invasion force led by the Carryx has overwhelmed the defenses, killed a percentage of the population to show their dominance, and take away the brightest as prisoners. The Carryx seem to be part of hive, that uses conquered species to expand their power. A species is either useful to them or its not.

Our “heroes” are part of a research group that had just made an important break through. They have to learn how to understand the Carryx and to understand what their mission to make themselves useful is. But the Carryx, are fighting an enemy that has placed a spy in the midst of the humans – and they need to communicate their information back home…

This book started off slowly for me. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck’s (the writing partners who are James S.A. Corey) last series, The Expanse, was one of the my favorite SciFi series of the new millennium. I also loved the TV show based on the books. Having completed that series, I probably went into the new one with the wrong expectations. Instead of space cops, and ships crew, we have start with the inner workings of academia in the future, which is not dissimilar to how its done now. But when things get moving, the magic is there.
