What if Malcolm Reynolds played the part of Rooster Cogburn on a dusty backwater where a drought was in progress? This is the central conceit of Coup De Grace. There is even a point of view character who plays the Mattie Ross part. Only the murderer here has different motives, and may be connected to the drought and unrest happening on the planet. Along the way, Simon and Inara play spy, and Kaylee and Wash work among the common folk. A nice adventure with the crew.
