Father Brown is quietly in the background of most of his stories, seemingly bumbling around… and often the criminal doesn’t come before man’s justice… but often they do receive the absolution that their soul needs. Example – master criminal Hercule Flambeau is “caught” by the good priest, given absolution, and then becomes a detective. It is an interesting dynamic that Chesterton uses. The stories here are among the earliest Fr. Brown stories, and they improve as they go along.
