By Elmore Leonard
Jack Foley is on the run with his new friend – Cundo Rey. Cundo, Jack, and Dawn all live close to each other and Jack is able to get his latest charges dropped thanks to Cundo’s expensive lawyer. Now, they will all work together – but who is conning who?
With a cast of returning rogues, Elmore Leonard has the raw ingredient for a classic story. Double crosses, some interesting dialogue. However, it never quite gels the way it would have. Jack and Cundo feel like three dimensional characters. Dawn is 2D, and everyone else seems to be drawn in one dimension. Still, lesser Leonard is as good or better than your average crime writer.
