2023 #33 – Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest

By Stephen Ambrose

(Continuing my June reading info dump) A kindle sale brought this book into my collection. I watched the HBO miniseries when it came out. Never followed up with the book. As expected the book was better and more detailed than the mini-series. The book follows the company from their formation to the end of the war.

The book’s main problem is that the company has heavy attrition – promotions, transfers, and causalities. So, there is not really someone to follow throughout the events of the book. Major Dick Winters is mostly the focus of both book and series. But he is promoted out of the company, and ends up promoted to staff and leadership positions over the company. All of this means that we hear about the events, but never get invested in too many of the members.

Still its a compelling read about how one company fights at the vanguard of the European theater. And the effects it has the men.
