Imagine a world where magic is real, but wizards are born (and sometimes bred) with limited powers. Houses can be enchanted or haunted, and as the modern age of the 19th century continues – they are becoming a rare breed. When Merritt Fernsby unexpectedly inherits an estate on an island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, he is shocked to learn that it is enchanted. Hulda Larkin of BIKER (the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) comes to help and determine what kind of enchantments exist. Mr. Fernsby is a novelist in the 1840’s. Miss Larkin has a history as a house whisperer – one assignment ended with a rogue sorcerer arrested, for a crime against other wizards.
Will Mr. Fernsby and Miss Larkin be able to figure out the secrets of Whimbrel House? And will they be able to do it with a mysterious something lurking nearby? Are the two things related?
A cozyish story with a few twists. Enjoyable.
