2023 #19 – Hollow Beasts

By Alisa Lynn Valdes

Jodi Luna grew up in North New Mexico and left her ancestral homeland to pursue writing and academics in Boston. Now she is back home beginning work as a game warden. This brings her in contact with a white supremacist and begins a game of deadly cat and mouse, as the bad guys are moving into the area and are getting more violent. Teaming up with a local deputy will they be able to catch the bad guys or be killed first?

A fast paced story that feels pretty authentic to New Mexico. The characters feel believable, they make good and bad choices (even the sheriff reminds me of people I know). The story is violent, so I wouldn’t recommend it to those who don’t like it. Yes, everything is ramped up to 10, (It’s my first day. I am the only good Leo in the area, etc.) but if that is the biggest sin, I can overlook it.
