Detective Laurie Campbell, living in Galveston, Texas; has a complicated family. Her husband David and she have recently had a still birth; and they are both grieving. He father-in-law, Frank, is being released from prison, convicted of murdering her mother-in-law Annie (before she was even dating her husband). Frank’s father-in-law, Warren, is the former chief of police.
Not long after Frank’s return, his long estranged brother reenters his life. And then another girl goes missing, and is found dead in the place and poised in the same way as Annie. Now Laurie has to find the truth of the murder, the truth of her family, all while a major hurricane is bearing down on the island.
An enjoyable mystery and an Amazon First Read. I could sympathize with David and Laurie’s relationship after suffering the loss of an unborn child. My only complaint is I would love for a modern protagonist who does not have a complicated family backstory…. not the still birth. The father-in-law, grandfather-in-law, the conflicts of interest…
