By Phil Rogers
Former Chicago Tribune writer Phil Rogers writes a good book on Ernie Banks- focused on the infamous 1969 collapse of the Cubs. This is a good introduction to both subjects. Mr. Cub was an icon of the franchise – the first black player for the Cubs and a Hall of Famer.
However, by splitting the difference in subjects – the 1969 Cubs and Mr. Cub its not covering either too thoroughly. The 1969 Cubs were already written about well in Rick Talley’s “The Cubs of ’69” (Which Rogers’ quotes) and Ernie Banks has had several biographies written about him – I would recommend Ron Rapoport’s “Let’s Play Two”.
This is a good book, just didn’t cover anything I hadn’t read before.
