By Esau McCaulley
This is the leadoff of new series by IVP about the liturgical year, called “Fullness of Time”. It’s made to be read by someone learning about or deepening their knowledge about Lent.
McCauley does not come from a liturgical background (he describes himself growing up “Black Baptist”), so came to the liturgical calendar as a young adult (like I did). As such he has a different relationship with the idea of repentance and sin, then do many in the Mainline Protestant tradition. And he blends those ethics well. As a person of color he is not afraid to discuss racism and its legacy in an authentic way.
