2022 #78 – The Flock

J. Todd Scott

Sybilla “Billie” Laure escaped the fiery end of the cult she grew up in with only her child Reneta. A decade later, now married and as off the grid as she can be in rural Colorado, her world turns upside down when her husband is killed and her daughter is kidnapped. Now she is off to reclaim her daughter and to figure out if the cult is reborn and who now leads it…

This book knows its Colorado and New Mexico towns, keeps you guessing about whether there is supernatural activity or if all involved are liars or lunatics, and keeps doling out the backstory from different perspectives (Billie, “Adam”, various documents and interviews). It kept moving along at a good clip.

Why only a 3/5? The final act. The act itself is fast moving and well written. **Spoiler warning

You were warned – Conspiracies….I don’t have a problem with them. But there were so many secondary characters “in on it” it totally took me out of the moment. Billie’s only female “friend” in Limon. The Sherriff’s only friend in Limon. The FBI local leadership. I mean I could understand some of the people revealed. But all of them?
