2022 #67 – The Bright Side of Going Dark

By Kelly Harms

Mia is an influencer who is going through a rough patch. Paige works at the platform where is Mia is queen. Paige is a loner who is escaping her problems through avoidance and ignoring her feelings. Their paths intersect when Paige’s sister, and huge Mia fan, tries to commit suicide, the same weekend (and near) where Mia goes dark. Paige decides to take over her account and have her sister help – without telling the truth.

Mia and Paige are characters that come from central casting – the overwrought influencer on the edge and the loner “hacker”. Jessica is the much younger sister who is caught between the two. Mothers, friends, the memory of Mike, and the various men round out the cast of characters.

I found the main characters more sympathetic as they went on. No surprises, just character reveals and growth that made them less cookie cutter. This was a “had it, hadn’t read it, London to Philly (and back again) is a long time to read.
