A long time ago Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson had a mutual interest in wargaming, sailing, that grew into Dungeons and Dragons. What started with them grew into an empire that experienced a “satanic panic”, and years of corporate excess, greed, and mismanagement – eventually TSR would be bought by Wizards of the Coast.

And this book is a good introduction to what happened….

Riggs tries to be fair to everyone, but without the participation of several key people the narrative lacks certain perspectives that would have been interesting to have. Not his fault, but at times the attempts at balance seem to be pulling punches more than anything else. Good place to start if you didn’t live through those times – with the rumors, stories, and lack of products (followed by years of internet rumors and innuendos).
