2022 #65 – Star Wars: The High Republic: Path of Deceit

By Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland

The latest YA book in the High Republic series. Force related items are going missing around the galaxy. Zallah Macri and her padawan Kevmo Zink are dispatched to the Outer Rim world of Dalna to investigate a group called the Path of the Open Hand. The group believes that the force is not there to be used….

Their missionaries include two siblings – Yana and Marda Ro. Marda is a true believer and Yana is a trusted missionary. Their leader “Mother” is building a ship to becomes the groups new mobile headquarters – the ship is to be called the Gaze Electric.

But not everything is as it seems, young love will blossom, and the Jedi will find themselves surprised and isolated…

Listen, this book has the expected YA tropes, but really can’t we get more well written, new stories like this? I am tired of reimaging the same time periods, with the same protagonists over and over and over again. The last few chapters take the story from predictable to well above average. If the whole book would have been more like that, I would have given it 5 stars. Confession – I have one child left who fits into the “YA” category, so I fully understand that I am not the target audience.
