2022 #64 – The Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance

By Bruce M. Metzger

This was a book that I have used as a reference many times as an undergrad and seminary student. But it was always in the library and generally needed by classmates – so it was skim and hand off. I bought a copy and read it cover to cover.

If you are interested in the development of the canon of Scripture, this is a good place to start. Metzger is an interesting writer and thorough in his research. Metzger was one of the most important figures in Biblical translation in the last century. He was heavily involved with the Alands and company in the UBS Greek New Testament. He was able to straddle the fence as a relatively conservative scholar who took the critical and higher challenges of translation and transmission seriously. I am not sure how he would be received today – because he does not fit easily into the Evangelical mold.

What stops me from giving it 5 stars? Its 35 years old and more information is always becoming available.
