2022 #45 – American Cosmic: UFOs, Religion, Technology

By D.W. Pasulka

This is the result of a “six year ethnographic study” looking at the process of a religion forming around UFOs… Only while that may have been the academic underpinning (and does shine through in various ways), really this is the story of Tyler, Jacques Vallee, Hynek’s “Invisible College” and how various of what traditionally has been considered the “high strangeness” reports and traditional religious experience (as the good professor’s specialty is Catholic studies, this is largely the focus) intersect. While reaching no firm conclusions it raises a lot of interesting questions and doesn’t shy away from the framework questions about we approach the world help us to understand the parts of life we don’t understand. Best book I’ve read on the subject – largely becuase it is more concise than Vallee’s writings.
