Frank and his neighbors are back in a Florida subdivision after an EMP went off….And this untrained group… has an understanding with the local bad boy to help guard things…survives a running gun battle with local gang…while raiding a hardware store to get the pieces they need to create a water system…
What I enjoyed about the first book was that Frank was not your typical modern survival book protagonist. He was not a grizzled veteran of the special forces (or the best friend of said Rambo), a cop cross trained in disaster management, or someone who is trying to get to their perfectly stocked and situated hidey hole. He is just a normal guy, who reads books, watches TV, and has a vague knowledge of what needs to be done. The first book was fast paced and semi realistic.
This one is fast paced and much less realistic. So – a bit of spoilers. If you went joy riding around having armed confrontations with gangs armed like they were in Predator 2, it wouldn’t just be your convenient, new friends that die. This series doesn’t look like it will go in the direction of so many of them – the rugged survivalist fighting against the golden hordes (or the government) to maintain some simplistic, libertarian paradise. I fear its going the other way, where with no training they become super soldiers.
