By: Jon Krakauer
Jon Krakauer was a writer for Outdoor magazine who was able to talk them into paying for him to pursue one of his childhood dreams – climbing Mt. Everest. In what was supposed to be an article about the commercialization of the climb (guides taking underqualified climbers to the summit) – it instead evolved to cover the deaths of 9 guides and clients from several groups on a fateful day in May 1996. Krakauer covers his trip the good and the bad. And includes a very “warts and all” account. That includes his own guilt and bad judgement made when all of them were tired and oxygen deprived.
It is a fascinating read. This is the edition of the book that includes his “new afterward” where he takes umbrage at The Climb – and snipes at the co-author who was not on Everest with them.
