By: Daniel José Older
Jedi Masters Cohmac Vitus and Kantam Sy, along with their Padawans Reath Silas and Ram Jomaram head to Corellia to investigate a suspected Nihil sighting. The local government, parochial and corrupt, doesn’t seem to believe in the threat. Their force sensitive friend Zeen is having feeling for another Padawan and pursuing her former friend turned Nihil. All become intertwined with a security company run by a teenager. And then the Nihil attack and a traitor is revealed…
Dark Horizon is a part of the YA series of High Republic books and take place simultaneously with The Fallen Star. Of the High Republic books so far, this has been the most propulsive for me. Since I finished last night I have been trying to figure out why. Part of is that Older’s writing style connects with me better than some of the others. Another reason is that Kantam Sy is a Padawan of Yoda and spends part of the book recounting the end of his time with Yoda and his time away from the order… The last part is that with the the interweaved stories include the Padawans and Zeen dealing with their feelings about being Jedis or being involved with Jedi. Crash, young head of the security company, is dealing with her own insecurities. And their is humor…
This has been my favorite of the High Republic books.
