By: Joe Posnanski
Joe Posnanski is my favorite sports writer (still writing). Buck O’Neil was a Negro League player, scout for the Cubs, and the first black coach in baseball. I had heard stories that he had a big impact on the careers of Ernie Banks and Billy Williams (two of my Dad’s favorite players). Posnanski’s book is one part biography (its all scattered in there) and one part baseball history as seen through the lens of someone who chose love over hate. But understood why others could not let it go – although it seemed to bother him. A wonderful book about a wonderful man, and a recent Hall of Famer. I hope that my light shines that brightly when I am in my 90s.
