The second day after Frank retires – an EMP hits (this is in the title, but I will try to not spoil much else). Unlike your average protagonist in a novel about survival, Frank is not an ex soldier, first responder, secret agent, or anything else. He is also not a deeply religious individual. He was a truck driver who built a company, before selling it. He does love to read survivalist novels and has some helpful items with him. This is obviously the first in a planned series – it only covers the first couple of days after the incident. This was a breezy, fast read, but not high art.
