This was a Kindle First selection from March 2020, that promptly got ignored… I tend to have both a physical and a Kindle book going simultaneously. When I traveled for work I tended to buy Kindle books to read on the road. Now the Kindle books tend to be for reading while I am waiting (with the exception of some series I really like, if I started them on Kindle, I tend to stay on Kindle). During the pandemic the combination of a huge increase in screen time and lack of waiting around anywhere has put me way behind on my reading.
All of this to say I found the first Rachel Marin novel to be a fun read in the mystery category. Marin is a somewhat cliche heroine – tragic past who now is well trained and likes to meddle. But her kids help bring some more reality to the situation (as does the babysitter situations) as does the fact she is not a perfect detective. Tends towards the darker side.
