By Scott Simon
NPR’s Scott Simon writes a short love letter to the then World Champion Chicago Cubs. It’s a retelling of his lifelong fandom and recounts the stories that Cubs fans told ourselves about the 108 year drought between the 1908 World Series win and the 2016 World Series win. And then recounts the 2016 World Series in some detail. He’s also someone who has as a close family friend Charlie Grimm (former Cubs First Basemen and Manager) and his godfather is the legendary Cubs broadcaster Jack Brickhouse. Its a sentimental read for this Cubs fan.
My only complaint is that in the litany of good years that we did not go to the World Series, he doesn’t touch on 1984 or 1989 1st place wins in the East, that ended … poorly (the first two times in my young life that allowed me to join the “die hard” Cubs fans, and learn the Cubs ancient mantra – “There’s always next year”).
